Lot 51*
A magnificent enamel Casket, probably Birmingham, circa 1755-60

Sold for £ 1,750 (US$ 2,115) inc. premium
A magnificent enamel Casket, probably Birmingham, circa 1755-60
Of rectangular shape, the domed lid painted with a Fête champêtre scene with a central gallant and a lady dancing on a terrace veranda before a riverscape, flanked by two musicians and a group of figures resting before a ruined arch and a fountain to Neptune, the sides of the box brightly painted with individual bouquets of flowers. fancy insects and dragonflies in flight, with gilt metal mounts, 21.5cm wide (some restoration)

Footnotes

  • The four figures on the left of the box are taken from Watteau's Les Champs Elisées which is currently in the Wallace Collection, London, probably after an engraving by Nicolas-Henri Tardieu. The Cellist and Flautist are probably taken from an engraving by Benoît Audran the Younger after Watteau's Le Concert Champêtre. A similar casket is illustrated by Therle and Bernard Hughes, English Painted Enamels (1951) p 44, fig 18. The flower painting on this casket provides a direct link with English opaque white glass. In particular a glass tea canister in the Victoria and Albert Museum appears to be by the same hand, see Robert Charleston, Le Verre Blanc Opaque Anglais, Cahiers de la Ceramique du Verre, vol 28 (1962), p 264, fig 2
