1969 AMC Rambler S/C Coupe
Chassis no. A9M097X302673
After the success of the Javelin and the two-seater AMX in 1968, American Motors was looking for another twist, when the Hurst Corporation came up with this one. Based on the two-door Rogue hardtop, it was called the S/C Rambler and 1,512 were sold in 1969.

This car joined the Lewis collection in 2003 but it was bought new at Jackson Motor Co. in Walla Walla, Washington. Donald Coates of nearby Kennewick paid $3,156.18 for the S/C and traded in a 1966 Rogue for $1,066. The documents come in a hefty file with the car, which Coates kept until 1997 when he sold it to Don Dimm of Snohomish, Washington.

This car has had a frame-off restoration and is finished correctly in the first of three red/white/blue paint schemes offered, which was applied to 500 cars. It’s powered by a Ram-Air, 315-horsepower, 390 cubic-inch V8, with a 4-speed transmission and 3.54 posi rear axle and dual exhausts. The gauge package includes a tachometer on the steering column, and it has a teak steering wheel and power disc brakes, but no power steering. The interior is reupholstered in correct black vinyl. The odometer shows 96,443, which is likely to be correct. Never common, this is a rare car today.
