With the market for its luxury models hard hit by the post-Wall Street Crash Depression, Mercedes-Benz sought to establish itself in the medium-priced family car market sector with a range of new models designed by one of the most gifted automobile engineers of his generation - Hans Nibel. Introduced in 1936, the Type 230 was fourth in this series of Nibel designs that would form the mainstay of Mercedes-Benz production in the difficult years of the mid-1930s. The first of this line - the Type 170 - had appeared in 1931. Although outwardly of conservative appearance, the revolutionary 170 embodied Nibel's advanced ideas on chassis design, featuring a box-section frame with independent suspension all round and four-wheel hydraulic brakes that set new standards of ride comfort and safety. It was also competitively priced for a six-cylinder car and suited the prevailing market conditions, being compact and economical yet constructed to Mercedes-Benz's traditionally high standard.
The 170 was a huge success and spawned a family of larger-engined, more-powerful models, including the 200 (1932) and 230 (1936), the latter being a modernised and re-styled version powered by a 2.3-litre, 55bhp, sidevalve six. In 1937, the 200 and 230 (W21) were replaced by the 230 (W143) whose engine had already been used in the predecessor model. Two different chassis designs were employed; long-wheelbase tourers and limousines using a box-section frame while the short-chassis cars employed an oval-tube backbone. Production ceased in 1939 after 24,500 230s of all types had been built.
The Mercedes-Benz 230 was frequently used by German officials during the Second World War, after which some were confiscated and taken to the USA, which probably is the case with this example. This most handsome left-hand drive 230 Cabriolet B was purchased in the USA in 2008 as a restoration project and imported to Spain where it has been fully rebuilt, both inside and out. The engine had parts missing but in 2010 a replacement Type W143 unit was acquired and fitted in place of the broken original. Described as in good working condition, the vehicle has been fully finished for the auction and the new engine has zero kilometres on its bores. This most stylish pre-war Mercedes-Benz soft-top comes with DUA importation documents and US Certificate of Title.

Cette élégante Mercedes 230 cabriolet B de 1937 fut probablement emmenée juste après la Seconde Guerre mondiale aux Etats-Unis où elle fut achetée en 2008 en vue de sa restauration et importée en Espagne où elle a été totalement reconstruite, intérieur et extérieur. Le moteur étant incomplet, un Type W143 de remplacement fut acheté et monté à la place du groupe d’origine cassé. Décrit comme étant en bon état de marche, ce véhicule a été totalement terminé pour la vente avec un moteur zéro kilomètre. Cette très belle Mercedes décapotable d’avant guerre possède son document d’importation DUA et son titre américain.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge what is known as a Buyer's Premium. Buyer's Premium on all Automobilia lots will adhere to Bonhams group policy:

25% up to £50,000 of hammer price,
20% from £50,001 to £1,000,000 of hammer price,
and 12% on the balance thereafter. This applies to each lot purchased and is subject to VAT.

For Motor Cars and Motorcycles a 15% Buyer's Premium is payable on the first £50,000 of the final Hammer Price of each Lot, and 12% on any amount by which the Hammer Price exceeds £50,000. VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.

Some lots may be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price. These lots will be clearly marked with the relevant symbol printed beside the lot number in the catalog.
