In her tribute to Robert Goldwater, Director of the Museum of Primitive Art, Mellon said "Born of my interest in German Expressionism, I was drawn to these objects (of "Primitive" cultures) by their exotic beauty and evocative stylistic relationship to modern art, especially German Expressionism and Cubism...[Goldwater] taught us to see their luminous beauty - so different from that of our Western tradition - as cult objects of deep spirituality or as artifacts of daily use" (Robert Goldwater: a Memorial Exhibition, October 1973-February 1974, The Museum of Primitive Art, New York).
