Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE:
Collection of Stan Getz (presented by Verve Records)
Thence by descent to the present owner

Getz/Gilberto was issued at what appeared to be the end of the American bossa nova craze, but its release reinvigorated the genre for American audiences. The album is a collaboration between American saxophonist Stan Getz, Brazilian guitarist Joao Gilberto, his wife, vocalist Astrid Gilberto and composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. The powerful combination of all these talents — Gilberto, who many credit with inventing the genre of bossa nova, Jobim, who created some of its loveliest and most intriguing melodies, and Getz, who popularized the form with American audiences — resulted in one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time. Getz/Gilberto won the 1965 Grammy for album of the year, the first time a Jazz album was so honored. The first track, 'The Girl from Ipanema,' won for Record of the Year and is considered a top jazz standard today.

A copy of the Getz/Gilberto album cover accompanies this lot.
