As referenced by the serial number "AS", this Alvis Special body was built for the Alvis works to their specification. The intriguing design is of course a 'nod' to the more famous 4.3 Alvis Vanden Plas tourer, well known for its the dramatic 'cut down' door design, of which only 12 were made and are considered among the most desirable sports cars of the late 1930s. Remarkably, the build sheet from the Alvis factory record indicates that the whole body for this car was copied from those very cars, Vanden Plas chassis #14320, being specifically referenced on its build sheet and making it a very special car on its own.

The SB has been well maintained, residing in the same ownership since 1975 and was for many years part of a stable of several high quality British cars, of those the owner retained this the longest and it is now being sold from his estate. The car has been restored with new bright red leather as specified on the original build sheet. Again, copying the 4.3 car directly, it was redone in red and black, but now the black has been replaced in ivory finish. The overall condition of the paintwork is very good, but not of show quality, whereas the new trim and upholstery are excellent. The top shows some wear, and the car photographs better with the top removed. There is also a well-formed rear tire cover. The car is reported to run, shift and stop flawlessly and an interesting modification is a larger S.U. carburetor which was added, apparently, to improve performance. The carburetor protrudes from the side of the bonnet where it is neatly covered with a separate plate. The headlights have been modified to sealed beam, a road use specification in the USA, though naturally it would look better with period large Lucas headlights.

As "Alvis Special 226," the car was obviously ordered with the specification that the larger tourer, a truly giant dramatic car, be copied on the current chassis. Likely first owner Fred George Rex Rowlings of Gloucester, was enamored of that body, which may have been inordinately expensive. Today, the remaining models of the original twelve 4.3 Vanden Plas tourers change hands for several hundred thousand dollars. This is a more inexpensive way to enjoy the ownership of a car with its original body and all components making the finest sport car Alvis ever made.
