Ex-Dan Haaby, Legend of the Motorcycle Concours award-winner
1968 Harley-Davidson KR-TT Road Racer
Engine no. 68KR8002
Consider that the KR-model was Harley-Davidson's first racebike to employ a foot shifter and hand
clutch when it was introduced in 1952, and that it battled with great success for almost the next 20
years with an "old-fashioned" 750cc sidevalve powerplant, right up until the advent of faster multi-
cylinder rivals. In fact, from 1954-62 KR riders won nine straight AMA Grand National Championships. In
all, KRs would notch 13 GNC crowns.

During those years, anyone with the money could walk into a Harley-Davidson dealership and order
up a KR flat-tracker or, like this bike, a KR-TT, suitable for TTs and roadraces. In 1966, the base KR-TT
would set you back all of $1425. Buyers had options to specify, like three sizes of gas tank – 2¼, 3¾ or 6
gallons – and a 3-quart or 6-quart oil tank. Three kinds of seats were available. Wheels could be steel
or aluminum, 18 or 19 inches. The standard 8-inch brakes could be updated with big Daytona-spec
stoppers. Three types of handlebar were on offer, plus a myriad of gearing choices both internal and
external.

Of course, some KR-TTs were "more equal" than others. Dan Haaby's #22 factory roadracer, for
example. Haaby was a fast-rising California dirt-track ace during the mid-1960s who came to the big
teams' attention with his amateur-class performance at the weekly Ascot Park half-mile jousts. During
the track's 1964 season, Haaby took a record 33 wins, and at one stretch won an amazing 14 straight
heats and main events. The man could roadrace, too. At one of his first amateur events, a soggy affair
in Iowa, he qualified his Matchless 500 a full 13 seconds quicker than the second-place man! That kind
of riding eventually got him a seat on a factory Harley.

This machine is in the trim Haaby would have had for the 1968 and '69 Daytona 200s. It uses a new
replacement version of the factory's special "Low Boy" frame to lower center of gravity, and is equipped
with a huge Ceriani front brake, 35mm GP forks and Borrani alloy rims. The current owner campaigns
two other Harleys in AHRMA races; this one underwent a full nut-and-bolts restoration with authenticity
in mind and, in fact, took second-in-class at the prestigious Legend of the Motorcycle Concours
d'Elegance in 2007.
