SMITH, Sir WILLIAM SIDNEY (1764-1840, known as Sir Sidney Smith, Admiral)
LARGE MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF SMITH BY WILLIAM MARSHALL CRAIG, miniature painter (d. 1827), en grisaille in washes, head and shoulders three-quarters facing left, set against a military background of standards, troops, a gun and defences indicative of Acre, signed and dated 1815 by the artist and inscribed by him 'Sir Sydney Smith, who with 300 British Sailors defeated Buonaparte and his Army at Acre', on card, inscribed twice on the verso in an American hand 'Yours truly Pascal Loomis', framed and glazed, size of image c. 11 x 9 inches (28 x 23 cm), overall size 17 x 12½ inches (43 x 32 cm), 1815

Footnotes

  • Smith's defence of Acre in 1799 proved a decisive check on Napoleon's ambitions in the East, ending any further prospect of success in Syria, and precipitating his departure from Egypt. Acre was the first serious setback in Napoleon's military career.

On 18 June 1815 Smith rode with Wellington from St. Jean to Waterloo and was therefore able to record: 'though I was not allowed to have any of the fun, I had the heartfelt gratification of being the first Englishman that was not in the battle who shook hands with him.'
