1938 Reo Speed Delivery
Following a harrowing time in the early years of the Great Depression, the Reo Motor Car Company exited the motor car business during the summer of 1936. Thereafter, the firm would build only commercial vehicles.

Reo was well known and respected in the truck business. The Reo Speed Wagon had been built since 1915, when trucks were known for anything but speed. A parcel delivery truck was introduced in 1923, based on the company’s taxicab chassis and available with panel or screen sides. The Speed Wagon concept was expanded to heavier trucks during the 1920s, to two and eventually three tons. This spawned a “Junior Speedwagon” for 1928 on the half-ton chassis, advertised as the “Lowest Priced Six-Cylinder Truck of its Size in America.” As time went on, the name often appeared as the single word “Speedwagon.”

As with other truck builders, Reo began to adopt styling cues on cabs and grilles in the 1930s. An agreement with Mack begat the “Mack Jr.” line, a series of Reo-built light trucks for that Pennsylvania manufacturer, built in 1936 and 1937. The “Brilliant New Speed Delivery” chassis was introduced in 1937, priced at just $555. Available on wheelbases of 114 or 120 inches, it offered a choice of four- or six-cylinder power.

This Reo Speed Delivery was restored some time ago but presents well. The quality of restoration is typical and appropriate for a commercial vehicle. The dark green paint exhibits a good shine, contrasted by black fenders. The brightwork is generally good, and whitewall tires give it a festive air. The engine is strong and the truck started quickly and ran well when demonstrated. This Speed Delivery was been owned by local bank for many years and was used as their publicity vehicle at parades and other events. It is rare and unusual survivor for this legendary make.
