1923 Reo Model T-6 Touring
In 1904, Ransom E. Olds left the Olds Motor Works, which he had founded, after a quarrel with the Smith brothers, Frederic and Angus, who had become its managers. He promptly started the R.E. Olds Company, then faced a challenge from the Smiths, who claimed rights to his name. Olds then took his initials for the new company, renaming it the Reo Motor Car Company.

Reo cars were offered with one or two cylinders, at prices comparable to Olds. By 1907, Reo was third place in sales, behind Ford and Buick. A four-cylinder car was introduced for 1910, a 226 cubic inch F-head developing 35 horsepower. In 1916, came a 45-hp six, and for 1920 the T-6, a 50 hp F-head with Hotchkiss drive and Reo’s distinctive interconnected clutch-brake. The clutch pedal applied a transmission brake and the brake pedal operated on the rear wheels. The T-6 was Reo’s sole passenger car model until the introduction of the Flying Cloud in 1927.

A mostly original car, this Model T-6 Reo has been painted in promotional colors for Budweiser beer, and a Budweiser tap handle has been adapted as a radiator mascot. The car has the disc wheels characteristic of the 1920s, and the body and wheels are painted in bright red. Fenders and running gear are black. The paint is of medium quality, and close inspection shows that it was done hastily. The nickel brightwork is tarnished, and the original interior is worn and tattered, and the instruments show blemishes. The car appears complete, however, and would serve as the basis for a good restoration. The wood steering wheel exhibits no cracks or splits, and should finish nicely.

The engine compartment is fairly clean, though not detailed. The odometer shows fewer than 50,000 miles, believed to be correct. Mid-20s Reo cars are seldom seen in the collector market. This car represents a very rare chance to acquire one.
