1945 Willys ¼ Ton 4x4 Type 201 'Jeep'
Chassis no. 037173
Although forever associated with Willys-Overland, the original Jeep was developed by American Bantam, formerly American Austin. Designed to meet the US Army's requirement for a rugged, go-anywhere, four-wheel-drive vehicle capable of surviving on the barest minimum of unskilled maintenance, Bantam's prototype Jeep was up and running by 1940. The Pentagon, though, doubted the firm's ability to meet the military's post-Pearl Harbor demands, so the major contracts went to Willys and the Ford Motor Company. Wartime production totalled some 650,000 and the Jeep saw service in every theatre of the Second World War and post-WW2 inspired the production of the Land Rover.

According to information provided by the seller the Jeep has an illustrious history being owned by Captain Dronne of the '9e Companie de Combat du RMT' in France. It is said to have worn the inscription 'Mort aux Cons' or 'death to the stupid' and was actually the second such vehicle that Captain Dronne would own, his first having been destroyed in August 1944. Hearsay has it that General de Gaulle once saw the Jeep's inscription when he was introduced to Captain Dronne, and dryly commented 'tough mission'!

Looking every bit the part of the wartime effort, this fabulous Willys Jeep is complete with full radio set-up, twin antennas, shovel, axe, jerry cans and full canopy top. Clearly restored using a fine basis and with exacting detail and accuracy for the original, it has now gained a little patina, which suits it rather well.

Sure to turn heads wherever you go, a Jeep is just plain fun.
