WHITE, ELWYN BROOKS. 1899-1985.
Typed Letter Signed ("E.B. White"), 1 p, 4to, Blue Hill, ME, August 16, 1931, to Mr. Herzig, on the New Yorker letterhead, stain from clip to upper left corner, mild toning.

Forster writes this amusing letter about the hubris of doctors to Sig Herzig, a prolific screenwriter of the 1930s and 1940s: "I hope, in making the adaptation, you will share my deep, almost anesthetic, feeling about the elegance of New York specialists and the magnificent loyalty of some of their assistants and nurses. Remember that in a hospital, a doctor of any significance is accompanied by an interne, two steps to the left and to the rear; and the interne, in turn, is accompanied by the head floor nurse, who is there to laugh at the joke that the doctor cracks in case the patient is too weak to laugh."
