One of the 20th Century's truly great automobiles, the Volkswagen 'Beetle' lived down its origin as Hitler's 'people's car' to become an all-time best-seller and cult classic. Designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche as a means of providing mass transportation, it wasn't until 1945 that Beetle production began in full swing. By the time European production ceased in 1974 a staggering 21,000,000-plus Beetles of all types had been made and they continued rolling off the line in countries like Mexico until recently. The Beetle was continuously up-dated from the time post-war production commenced, under British military supervision, in 1945, acquiring subtly altered coachwork, improved running gear and larger engines, but fundamentally remained the same car for the next 30 years or more.
The original 1100cc version gave way to a 1300 then 1500s by the mid 1960s, gaining more power , 12-volt electrics and a fully synchromesh gearbox along the way. Perhaps the most significant departure from the original design took place in 1970 when the torsion bar front suspension was replaced by MacPherson struts and a double-jointed back axle, improving the handling and ride, not to mention increasing luggage space under the bonnet. Front disc brakes became an option as well. Having surpassed the Model T Ford's record of 15 million units in February 1972, the revised 1303 series ushered in further changes to the bodywork that year.
This charming example of the evergreen Volkswagen Beetle was built in 1973 and has been the subject of major restoration work, including a re-paint and all new upholstery carried out in 2007-2008. Originally delivered in Los Angeles, the car comes with a decent history file containing the factory service book and an extensive file of invoices documenting the restoration. The non-factory items include the wood-rim steering wheel, gear stick and Sony audio system (with Bluetooth). To be sold registered in NSW.
