Of all the winged insects with the exception of the buttefly, the dragonfly is considered to be the most graceful and elegant in Far Eastern Art, particularly in Japan where it is also one of its emblems. The design of overlapping dragonflies is perhaps intended to allude to the fact that the in the past dragonflies were sometimes called 'departed-soul dragonflies' or 'Buddha dragonflies', because swarms of them could be seen flying in late Summer around the time of the Bon Festival, a Buddhist ceremony honouring the spirits of family ancestors.
