Inlaid with Shoki peering out of a circular window, in variously glazed pottery, the reverse inlaid with a fleeing oni in copper and pewter, signed on a pottery tablet Rissai; with wood ojime and manju. 7cm (2¾in).

    The subject is one that appeared to be very popular with Shibata Zeshin, the teacher of Rissai, which he used in various formats. It was one of a number of designs in a group of drawings by Zeshin offered at Sotheby's New York, 18 September 1988.

    Compare also with a painting showing Shoki standing while two oni fall back in retreat, described but not illustrated by Howard Link, The Art of Shibata Zeshin, The Mr and Mrs James O'Brien Collection at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, Honolulu, 1979, no.46.

25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
