Footnotes

  • The 1½-litre 12/4 was a new addition to the Riley catalogue for 1935, being the Coventry firm's largest capacity four since the 1920s. Hugh Rose redesigned the engine with three main bearings, although the camshaft layout was retained, and the model could be supplied with six different styles of saloon bodywork as well as in more sporting open 2-seater Sprite or 4-seater Lynx form, some of the latter fitted with the Sprite engine which had hotter camshafts.
First registered 28 December 1936, and as confirmed by a buff log book entry from 4 August 1972, this handsome Lynx 12/4 has been in same family ownership for the last 39 years, having first been enjoyed by father and mother and subsequently passing into their daughter's hands. Having been last back-to-chassis rebuilt in 1985/6 and successfully participated in a Mittwochs-Runde Berlin event, 'AWD 503' was driven regularly by her until 1991, since when it has been garaged in Gloucestershire where we understand the engine was last turned over in 2006.
August 1983 correspondence on file from the vendor's father (a former Riley Racing Special and Redwing owner) indicates to a relative that, by the late 1970s, the 'Standard' 60bhp engine in the Lynx had been upgraded to one of 1500cc 'Sprite' specification with larger carbs, big-valve cross-flow cylinder head, compression ratio raised with high compression pistons to 8:1, high pressure oil pump, big ends altered to shell bearings to allow an extra 600rpm, and Sprite inlet camshaft giving an extra 15 degrees opening. The resultant power output, he claimed, was in the order of c85bhp. While the transmission, he wrote, had the usual mod of 'Traffic Clutch' removed with the drive being onto the bands of the pre-selector 4-speed gearbox and, instead of a 5.2:1 back axle ratio, more relaxed cruising had been achieved with a 4.1:1 final drive.
Apart from providing a classic pre-war open motoring experience for four, a Riley of this age and type would be eligible for all manner of vintage activities on road or track, being suitable for sporting trials by night or day, rallies, hill climbs or tours. All numbers are recorded in a current V5C registration document and hood and frame, side-screens and tonneau are included. After static-storage for the past 20 years however, and although appearing to be complete, full re-commissioning at least should be envisaged, if not more extensive restoration work required before driving. The motor car is therefore being sold strictly as viewed.
