Footnotes

  • Autocar was founded in Ardmore, Pennsylvania in 1900 by the Clark family and William Morgan, a partnership that had already produced a handful of automobiles while trading as the Pittsburgh Motor Vehicle Company. A single-cylinder chain-driven runabout, the first Autocar was superseded for 1901 by a twin-cylinder model, which is generally credited with being the first American-built multi-cylinder motor car to have shaft drive. A 16/20hp four-cylinder model was added to the range for 1905, which was followed in 1908 by the company's first six. In 1907 Autocar had diversified into the manufacture of commercial vehicles, a venture proving so successful that by 1912 it had pulled out of the passenger car market.
Autocar's first truck had a 97" wheelbase and a load capacity of 1.5 tons, and was powered by a twin-cylinder petrol engine. Larger models powered by four- and six-cylinder engines were added to the range later. 'Wherever there's a road' was adopted as the company's advertising slogan. Autocar's production boomed during WW2 thanks to military contracts but declined steeply thereafter, and in 1953 the firm was acquired by the White Motor Company. In 1980 White was taken over by Volvo, with Autocar continuing as a division. Since 2001 Autocar has been part of the Grand Vehicle Works Holdings group, which continues to use the brand name for its trucks.
This four-cylinder Autocar 27KS truck was personally imported by the current owner from South Dakota in July 2010, having been dry stored in a barn for over 50 years. Said to start easily and drive well, it features solid ribbed tyres and acetylene lighting. The latter is said to require some attention and the bodywork and paint likewise are in need of refurbishment. Described by the vendor as in generally good mechanical condition, the vehicle is offered with US title, current road fund licence, Swansea V5C registration document and a quantity of Autocar-related literature.
