Footnotes

  • By the early 1920s Chevrolet had abandoned its attempt to compete head-on with Ford's Model T - Ford was able to drop its prices annually whereas Chevrolet's steadily rose - and repositioned itself as a 'middle-market' manufacturer whose products possessed a greater degree of refinement. The introduction of the famous 'Stovebolt' overhead-valve engine - 'the six for the price of a four' - in 1929 helped consolidate the company's position as Ford's chief rival, and throughout the 1930s the six-cylinder Chevrolets proved immensely popular with the American public. In 1937 a new, more compact and more powerful 'Stovebolt' appeared, helping Chevrolet maintain its grip on the US automobile industry's No. 1 spot into WW2 and beyond.
The '150' (later 'One-Fifty') designation was first used in 1953 for Chevrolet's lowest-price range, the old 'Styleline' and 'Fleetline' designations being dropped. A major re-style and a new V8 engine were Chevrolet's hot news for 1955, so few observers can have been surprised when the '56 models emerged with only a minor facelift. Despite the new V8's presence, the old 235.5ci (3.9-litre) 'Stovebolt' six continued in production. A three-speed manual gearbox with column shift was the standard transmission, with overdrive and the two-speed Powerglide automatic available as extra-cost options.
One of four different models in the '56 Chevrolet One-Fifty line-up, the sedan offered here has the six-cylinder engine and two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, while other noteworthy features include tinted windows, steel fender skirts, power steering and air conditioning, the latter two being after-market installations. Restored in 2008 and presented in commensurately good condition, the car is finished in black with matching vinyl/cloth interior and is offered with current MoT/tax and Swansea V5 registration document.
