Footnotes

  • The basis for this remarkable and very special Mini is a 1969 Morris Super Deluxe, one of the final Minis from the BMC/BL era manufactured at the Cowley plant. The down to every last nut and bolt rebuild and upgrade programme, which took just under three years to complete, commenced with acid-dipping and chemically cleaning the Mk2 bodyshell, which was then acid etched for greater protection from the elements.
Both front wings, the front panel and bonnet, all of which detach for unfettered access to the entire front subrame, suspension and steering components, engine and all ancillaries, are made from curley carbon-fibre, and the car has been repainted in Sandy Beige as it left the factory. Halogen Headlights and an Austin grille, in the view of the vendor visually less fussy, complete a standard-look exterior.
The original hydrolastic suspension units have been changed for dry rubber-cone type with Hi-Lo mods, the shock absorbers fully adjustable from Gaz and the bottom arms rose-jointed.-arms. Mini Spares 4-pot allot callipers with vented and grooved 7.5ins discs and Green Stuff fast road pads replaced the drum brakes at the front, the performance of the rear drums uprated with Super Minifins and an AP Racing master cylinder fitted. The car sits on Minilite 5 x 10ins alloys shod with 165/70 Yokohamas.
The engine is the handiwork of leading high performance engine specialists Swiftune, the capacity being 1380cc, the cylinder head being to 1275 Miglia race spec, the 286 cam profiled by Kent. 1.5:1 roller rockers and double valve springs, a Metro Turbo knide-edged crankshaft, Vernier gears and a steel flywheel backplate complete internal upgrades.
Carburation is via a Weber 45 DCOE carb on a Maniflow inlet manifold supplied by a Facet silver top electric pump, collecting fuel from twin tanks in the boot filled through one external cap. Exhaust is via a Maniflow twin-box 2ins bore system and Lumenition, Lucas Sport Coil with 8mm Magnecor leads, custom single-core alloy radiator and Kenlow electric fan complete the spec of a seriously potent power unit, which, according to a dyno-reading on file, produces 126bhp.
Oil is picked up from a central pick-up in the sump, which contains a 4-speed Metro Turbo gearbox with Quaife 3.2 torque-bias limited-slip differential, and the clutch is an AP Rally. Inside, the roll-bar is in body-colour and the bucket seats are classic-type, and a Mk2 S correct 130mph speedo is flanked with Race Tech tacho and oil pressure/water temperature gauge.
The completed car was sufficiently highly rated by aficionados of the iconic model to be awarded cover car status and be extensively featured in the February 2009 edition of the 'Mini' World magazine. Indeed, as any inspection at Harrogate will confirm, this Mini remains in absolutely show-stopping condition, with no apparent deterioration to the finish of the components employed after what have clearly been only 3000 extremely careful miles since transformation. The specification, we would suggest, is about the ultimate one can achieve without straying too far away from the original Issigonis concept and incurring the wrath of some Mini purists by committing a modification too far.
