Footnotes

  • In WW2 Toyota was charged with developing a Jeep-like four-wheel drive off-road vehicle for the Japanese military but it was not until the Korean War that this type of product began to assume any degree of importance for the firm. Commissioned by the United States government, the Toyota Jeep BJ that first appeared in 1951 was both larger and more powerful than the Willys Jeep that had inspired it, boasting a 3.4-litre six-cylinder overhead-valve engine. Following the end of the Korean War in 1953, Toyota began exploring the civilian potential of its new off-roader, introducing a more refined version powered by a 3.9-litre engine – the 20 Series – in 1955, by which time the evocative 'Land Cruiser' name had already been adopted. In 1960 the concept was updated as the 'FJ40', which for the first time incorporated a low-range auxiliary transmission complementing the existing three-speed synchromesh gearbox, giving six forward speeds in total.
This very rare example of an early Land Cruiser was purchased for evaluation by The Rover Car Co Ltd of Solihull and first registered in the UK on 5th January 1966. Subsequent owners listed in the accompanying old-style logbook are Airedale Autos, Silsden (1970) and Edward Buckle of Keighley (no date). Unused since 1970, the Toyota was never recorded on the pre-1983 DVLC database and it took considerable effort on the vendor's part to retain its original registration number. A believed-genuine total of 42,377 kilometres (approximately 26,300 miles) is displayed on the odometer.
Retaining matching chassis/engine numbers, 'JXC 626D' is presented fresh from over 500 hours of restoration work and is only offered for sale because of the vendor's ill health. Completed in February 2011, work carried out included rewiring the electrics and overhauling the brakes while new parts fitted include the water pump, radiator, battery and tyres. (We are advised that spares are readily obtainable from the USA and Australia, the Land Cruiser's two most important export markets). A tonneau cover is fitted at the rear and the original hood frame is in place. The original hood and doors are included in the sale but are only fit for use as patterns.
Possibly the oldest of its type in the UK, the Land Cruiser is offered with old-style logbook, MoT to September 2012, Swansea V5C document, an original sales brochure and two books on the model. Described as a 'powerful machine that sounds superb', it is sure to be a centre of attention at any gathering of four-wheel drive or military vehicle enthusiasts.
