1911 Douglas 2¾hp Model D
Registration no. HW 7974
Frame no. S922031
Engine no. 2531
The ancestor of the Bristol-made Douglas was the 'boxer' engine used in the earlier Fée, also Bristol-made, designed by Joseph Barter. Douglas built this engine under licence and remained mostly faithful to the 2¾hp capacity and to the h.o. engine until the end of the company in the 1950s. Douglas gained a reputation for machines which were reliable and easy to use, their low build and tractability valuable in the 'run and jump' period. Their move into the gearbox era came with the 'Model D' and its descendants served with distinction in WW1.

HW 7974, a 'Model D', is the only working example of a 2-speed Douglas with automatic inlet valves, and one of the rare survivors of that early era, considered so important by Douglas Motors that they themselves retained this actual machine into the 1950s, its Bristol registration dating from its documented use in the first Pioneer Runs of 1930 and 1931 when ridden by a Mr D. Wither, being issued with Pioneer Certificate No. 17. Indeed, it is a very well-known and much press-photographed machine in publications such as The Motor Cycle, though more remains to be done in tracing its detailed history.

The vendor has kept his Douglas in excellent order, successfully completing both the Pioneer Run and the Banbury this year and being a much-requested machine for the Goodwood Festival of Speed.. Running beautifully, is being sold only because of the passage of time and comes with history papers, old MOT certificates, V5 and RF.60 Log-books. This is an opportunity to acquire an extremely important and historic Douglas motor cycle.
