Footnotes

  • A luxury Mini blessed with marginally greater boot space and an improved interior, the Wolseley Hornet (along with its Riley Elf stablemate) debuted in 1961, the duo being differentiated by contrasting chromed grilles in each marque's traditional style and the presence of a full-width wood veneer dashboard in the slightly more upmarket Elf. There was much greater use of chromium plating as well as the option of two-tone colour schemes, while both enjoyed an interior considerably better appointed than that of 'ordinary' Minis. The original 848cc-engined Elf/Hornet was superseded by the more powerful 998cc MkII in 1963. Built only between 1961 and 1969, the Elf and Hornet are today counted among the most collectible of early Minis, with the various independently produced special editions even more sought after. Best known of these is the 'Heinz' convertible, 57 of which were commissioned in 1966 by the famous '57 varieties' food producer from coachbuilders Crayford. The Heinz convertibles were offered as prizes in a competition and all were registered with the prefix 'LLH'. Finished in red with matching vinyl hood and deluxe interior trim and carpets, this example last ran 15 years ago and currently displays a total of 35,000 miles on the odometer. The car is presented in 'average' condition and comes with old-style buff logbook and Swansea V5 document. Sold strictly as viewed.
