Footnotes

  • Designed in South Africa, the Argson Runnymede was manufactured in the UK by the Stanley Engineering Co Ltd of Egham, Surrey, which had started out making self-propelled invalid carriages under the 'Argson' name in the 1920s. Both electrically-powered and Villiers petrol-engined versions of the Runnymede tricycle were made, one of the latter being used for an heroic crossing of the Alps in 1947! Like other makes of invalid carriage, the Argson would have been supplied to users by the Ministry of Health, with which Stanley Engineering had a lucrative contract. Runnymede production commenced circa 1936 and ended in 1954 when Stanley Engineering was bought by C B Harper Ltd.
This Argson Runnymede is powered by an electric motor rated a 0.5 horsepower. The vehicle had always resided in the Cobham area of Surrey until purchased by the Collection in March 1989, and last ran eight years ago. Accompanying documentation consists of two old-style buff logbooks. Sold strictly as viewed.
