c.1958 Triumph 500 Trials Special
Registration no. Unregistered
Engine no. T100 5402NA
Every classic trials competitor currently riding a twin cylinder Triumph had a boost in morale after Steve Saunders outright win in last month's pre-65 2-Day Scottish Trial; Steve was competing on his neatly prepared 3TA, and lost only one mark. Even so, in today's classic trials world it is the 500 Triumph that's in far wider use than its 350 sibling; the bigger twins more than holding their own against HT Ariels, and an assortment of large capacity AMCs and 'Enfields. Historically, of course, "works" 500 Triumphs were an important and exciting part of the Golden Era trials scene, an era when national Trade-supported events would see factory teams entered by seven or eight different British manufacturers; Triumph, back then, was represented by Jim Alves, Jack Wicken, John Giles, Peter Hammond, Ray Sayer, and other fine riders. The superbly prepared Special – which has lately acquitted itself in South Midland Centre events – is offered in a state-of-the-art specification. The finished product [that could be ridden in a trial tomorrow] illustrates the extent of the technical progress achieved on the back of pre-65 sport. The vendor advises that John Giles carried out the work on its re-conditioned motor, which not only explains the gentle tick-over but the hint of "zoom" when tweaking the throttle! With a neatly installed AMC gearbox, Manx Norton clutch, alloy central oil tank, Enfield primary cases, HT5 frame, REH forks, single sided hubs, and numerous other improvements, this ultra special Triumph clearly warrants very close inspection. Sold without documentation.
