Whilst enameled metal snuff bottles inspired by European subjects are well known, it is incredibly rare to find a later bottle illustrating a mythological tale, most likely directly copied from a 17th century French or Flemish painting or print. The subject matter, showing two scenes associated with the myth of the goddess Diana, were particularly popular within the canon of Western art, with examples such as Titian's 16th century painting 'Diana and Actaeon', now in the National Gallery in London, ranking amongst one of the masterpieces of Old Master Paintings. One side of the bottle shows Diana, goddess of the hunt, together with her hunting dogs. The other side shows the moment that Actaeon, a famous Theban hero, accidentally stumbled upon Diana bathing; alarmed, she turned him into a stag.
