  • PROVENANCE:
    Susan Ruth Ulrich (1897-1979), Jacksonville, Florida;
    G. Donald and Mary Rockey Ulrich, West Alexandria, Ohio (by descent from the above, G. Donald's aunt, in 1979);
    Thence by descent to the present owner, daughter of the above, in 2005.

    A portrait, animal and landscape painter, George Cole was mainly self-taught. He began his career by painting canvas advertisements for a traveling circus but later furthered his training in Holland, where he painted after the Old Masters. Returning to England, Cole settled in Portsmouth, painting mainly animals. His son, George Vicat Cole, was born there during this time. Both father and son began working together as itinerant artists through the countryside, painting land owners, their horses and dogs. George Cole Jr. went his own way after 1855 and adopted his mother's maiden name in order to set himself apart from his father.

    In 1840 Cole Sr. started exhibiting at the British Institution, a rival of the Royal Academy. As his popularity increased, in 1849 he started exhibiting at the Royal Academy and, until 1889, showed mainly landscapes of Hampshire, Surrey, Cornwall, Wales, and Sussex.
