Footnotes

  • Born in a family of artists in 1803, Preyer became one of the most important German still life painters of the 19th century. After studying at the Dusseldorf School of Painting, at first under Peter von Cornelius and later under Wilhelm von Schadow, he went on to exhibit in Berlin, where his paintings were collected by Consul Wagner, a founder of the Berlin National Gallery.
In 1837 Preyer went to Munich, where he spent a few years painting some of his most beautiful works. His talent became noticed by King Ludwig I, who bought one of his paintings. After 1848 he returned to Dusseldorf for the remainder of his life and continued to create exquisite still lives in the manner of the Old Masters. His paintings were widely collected in Europe and the United States.
