1990 Drysdale 'Dryvtech 2x2x2' Experimental Two-Wheel-Drive Motorcycle
Engine no. DT3-001
Featuring drive to both wheels, the bizarre looking machine offered here was designed and made in Australia by the Drysdale Motorcycle Company of Dandenong, Victoria. Engineers have explored the potential of two-wheel-drive motorcycles on-and-off over the years, arguably the best known examples being those produced by Rokon and, more recently, Yamaha. Ian Drysdale though, took the concept a stage further by incorporating not only two-wheel drive but also two-wheel steering.

The Drysdale is powered by a Maico-based 250cc two-stroke engine that uses crankcases of the company's own design and manufacture. Like Yamaha, Drysdale chose to drive the independent wheel motors by employing an hydraulic pump, in this case a Vickers unit sourced from the aerospace industry. There are two drive options available: 'in parallel' and 'in series', giving maximum speeds of 50km/h (31mph) and 100km/h (62mph) respectively. A valve in the hydraulic return line, activated by a right-side foot pedal, provides braking to both wheels simultaneously. The hub-centre steering's pre-pressurised hydraulic system is independent of the transmission's, while controls are restricted to the aforementioned brake pedal, a left-side foot pedal that must be held down to keep the bike in drive, and a conventional throttle.

Its maker claimed that the Dryvtech offered outstanding grip, with wheelspin virtually unachievable, even in sand or mud, while the combined effects of the steering and drive were said to make it impossible to slide the back end out - the bike reputedly high-siding the rider in mud! He did concede that the steering took a bit of getting used to, but reckoned that it was easily mastered with a little practice.

In 1998 Ian Drysdale sold this unique prototype to the Donington Grand Prix Collection where it has remained ever since. Described as in generally good condition, albeit in need of re-commissioning, it comes with original Drysdale Motorcycle Company correspondence and various newspaper and magazine articles.
