Lot 247
A rare Nantgarw teacup and a Paris saucer, circa 1818-20

Sold for £ 1,000 (US$ 1,242) inc. premium
A rare Nantgarw teacup and a Paris saucer, circa 1818-20
Of Duke of Cambridge service type, the cup of shallow form with a plain loop handle, painted in London with a central floral spray, the borders with alternating circular and oval panels painted with colourful birds, landscapes and arrangements of fruit, reserved on a red drapery ground, an elaborate gilded border inside within a dentil rim, saucer 12.5cm diam (slight wear to the gilding) (2)

Footnotes

  • In 1818, a Nantgarw dessert service of this pattern was given as a wedding gift by the Prince Regent to his brother, Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge. The decoration is attributed to Thomas Martin Randall. See W D John, Nantgarw Porcelain Album, illustration 58. Extant examples reveal some significant variations in the tone of the red ground and the gilded detail, making it likely that a number of services of this pattern were in fact produced. In addition to the dessert wares, a small number of tea and coffee wares are recorded. The pattern on this cup and saucer match exactly, suggesting that they formed part of a mixed Nantgarw and Paris service
