Sold for £ 9,000 (US$ 11,316) inc. premium
The Edwards Service: An important Nantgarw tea and coffee service, circa 1818-20
Locally painted, probably by William Billingsley, with equally spaced sprigs of pink roses with green and gold foliage, comprising a teapot, cover and stand of compressed circular form, a similarly shaped sucrier and cover with twin handles, milk jug, slop bowl, pair of saucer dishes, ten teacups, nine coffee cups and ten saucers, teapot 14.2cm high (teapot with restored cracks, two teacups and one coffee cup cracked) (38)

Footnotes

  • The milk jug, sucrier and cover and one saucer dish are illustrated by WD John, Nantgarw Porcelain (1948), illustrations 39A, 39B and 39C. The Edwards Service is one of three Nantgarw tea and coffee services discussed by WD John, op cit, pp 133-134. The others are the Duncombe Service, illustrations 41A, 41B, 41C, 42A and 42B, and The Twyning Service, illustrations 40A, 40B and 40C. All three formerly belonged to Edward Edmonds, the landlord of the Nantgarw factory, and are believed to have been painted and supplied by Billingsley, presumably in settlement of rent. The Edwards Service is thought to have been painted by Billingsley on the occasion of the marriage of Frances, a daughter of Edward Edmonds. By the early 20th century, the service was in the possession of the Misses Edwards of Caerphilly, great granddaughters of Edmonds
