An important pâte-sur-pâte plaque by Louis Solon, dated 1869
Executed in Paris, in hard-paste porcelain with a textured grey-brown ground, decorated in white relief with a maiden, her diaphanous skirt billowing as she runs, pursued by two Cupids disguised as wolves beneath animal skins, the scroll ornament below hung with pearls and entwined leafy branches, signed 'Miles 1869', 22.5cm x 30.9cm

  • Provenance: The Bernard Bumpus Collection. This plaque is likely to be one of the pieces Solon brought with him to England when he fled Paris in August 1870 to escape the Prussian invasion. In his 1992 book on pâte-sur-pâte, p.64, Bernard Bumpus discusses the arrangement with Minton that allowed Solon to sell his remaining stock of Parisian plaques provided the Minton factory was given first refusal. Solon's family papers recorded that between October and November 1869 thirty-nine plaques of various sizes were sold by Solon, who was no longer supplying Rousseau, his previous patron. Instead the principal buyer was Colin Minton Campbell of the Minton factory. Another plaque dated 1869, retained in the Minton ChIna Works Collection, was sold in these rooms, Masterpieces of Minton, 23 July 2002, lot 192.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

27.5% on the first £20,000 of the hammer price;
26% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £20,000 up to and including £700,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £700,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
