A fine Lowestoft tea canister and cover, circa 1760-62
Of large size and rectangular form with canted corners, moulded in 'Hughes' style with panels edged with scrollwork, flowers and leaves, painted in blue with a Chinaman pointing to a bird in a tree, the reverse with a fisherman on an island, inscribed on one end 'Singlo Tea', 'S' and 'T' on the other, a lattice border above the foot and a 'scroll and flower' border below the shoulder, the cover charmingly painted with a duck swimming beside bulrushes, 13.6cm high, marked with painter's number 5 (2)
