A figure of a boy attributed to Theophilus Smith and a figure of Venus by John Pattison, circa 1800 and dated 1825
Both in Pratt Ware colouring, the boy standing holding a bone for a playful dog, on a high octagonal base, 19.4cm high, the naked Venus leaning against a dolphin, holding a yellow robe, standing on a raised base, 14.8cm high, marked indistinctly 'John Pattison 1825' painted under the base (some restoration) (2)

  • The figure of the boy could be the work of Theophilus Smith as it is very similar to a marked figure, see Pat Halfpenny, English Earthenware Figures (1991), p 155. The Venus figure is illustrated in Halfpenny's book at page 118 and it was also loaned to the Stoke-on-Trent Museum in 1991. A John Pattison was listed as an earthenware and toy manufacturer in Longton between 1818 to 1830. Another figure marked in a similar way by Pattison was in the Ernest Allman collection.

27.5% on the first £20,000 of the hammer price;
26% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £20,000 up to and including £700,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £700,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
