Footnotes

  • Sybil Dunlop (1889-1968) was born to Scottish parents and completed her education in Brussels, where she became interested in jewellery. On returning to Britain she set up her jewellery business in Kensington Church Street, London and in the early 1920s was joined by W. Nathanson. The firm's designs are notable for their eclectic use of Celtic and Holbeinesqe devices as well as themes from nature. Nathanson was particularly proud of the firm's "carpet of gems" style whereby stones, usually stained quartz, were cut to order and placed in bold geometric patterns. At the outbreak of war in 1939, the firm closed and Sybil never returned to work due to ill health. After the Second World War, Nathanson ran the firm until his retirement in 1971.
