BRUNEL - RIVER THAMES and ROWING
"1885. Log. H.M.B", lithographed throughout, approximately 300 pages, several illustrations, pencil note "4/10/92. To be returned to Hm. Brunel" on title, publisher's cloth, soiled, upper joint split, 8vo, [1886]

Footnotes

  • A fascinating lithographed logbook, seemingly written by the engineer Henry Marc Brunel (1842-1903), second son of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, recording a series of boating trips undertaken by him and his companions (including fellow engineers E.M. Cruttwell, and John Wolfe-Barry, with whom he designed Blackfriars Bridge) on the River Thames over the course of one year, 1885. Inevitably evoking the mood of Three Men in a Boat (published in 1889), Brunel provides witty anecdotes of problems with locks and weirs, delights of bankside landscape, an extended involvement with the Henley Regatta (including difficulties of organising a photograph by William Taunt), less successful regattas at Kingston and Molesey "the Sunday after each Regatta was devoted to forgetting its joys"), information on eating houses along the river.
