Surmounted by a patinated bronze figure of a winged sphinx, mounted on the case with tapered sides engraved with silvered and gilt hieroglyphs, on a splayed base engraved with a winged scarab, the 4.25 inch slate Roman dial with gilt numerals, the drum movement striking the hour and half hour on a gong; together with the original obelisk side pieces, each enriched with corresponding silvered and gilt decoration, and the original receipt. Clock 40cm (15.75in), the obelisks 47.5cm (18in)

  • The clock was purportedly purchased by General Sir Sam Brown VC, GCB, KCSI, which was then given to the grandmother of the present owner, along with the original receipt from E. Gay, Lamaille and Co, dated 30th September 1880, for the sum of £37 for a gilt and porcelain 'Prince of Wales' and an 'Egyptian black and gilt mantle [sic] engraved' and a 'pair obelisks to match'
