Footnotes

  • The 1930s have been classified as a decade of exhibition and expedition in Irma Stern's professional career. It was the decade in which her critical achievements grew in number, with successful exhibitions throughout Europe as well as closer to home in South Africa. Stern began the decade in Europe, but finished it in Zanzibar, with extensive travels in South Africa and a journey to Dakar in between. As World War II effectively closed Europe to Stern, she sought out more and more inspiration in her local surroundings and the rest of Africa, while also experimenting more and more with her colour palette and branching more into charcoal and gouache to hone her artistic abilities.

The Cape Malay population of Cape Town would have been a natural source of inspiration to find the beautiful female subjects Stern so favoured. In Portrait of a Cape Malay Girl she utilises tonal contrasts of pink and orange to saturate the image with femininity and softness, contrasting them with blues and purples in the girl's hair to capture the form and focus of the figure. "Colour impacted profoundly on Stern. Driven by the intensity of her feelings, her works reveal her appreciation of the subtle nuances that she found around her."
