Footnotes

  • After many exhortations from friends and artistic colleagues, Pierneef first visited South West Africa (now Namibia) in March 1923. He held an exhibition in Windhoek in June 1923 and then a second more successful show in 1924 during his second visit.

The artist's distinct preference for South West Africa was demonstrated by the inclusion of two SWA views Karabib and Okahandja in the twenty eight Johannesburg Railway Station panels. The mountains around the town of Okahandja provided a wealth of subjects to which Pierneef responded by producing many works in oil, watercolour and by etching.

The SWA heat necessitated painting either in the early morning or early evening and the desert with its clear light and vibrant colours filled the artist with creative joy.

    Pierneef wrote at the time:
"It is a beautiful country, the desert, the drought, the peculiar translucent quality of the light. This country is individual but interesting to paint. The variety is intense and to do it properly one must stay here a whole year."

Another very similar work, depicting the same scene and dating from the same year, was sold at Stephan Welz & Co., Johannesburg, on 2 November 1992 (lot 437), erroneously catalogued as Landscape, Waterberg.
