Footnotes

  • John Muafangejo once described weaving as a gentle form of art, an art he learnt when a student in the 1960s at Rorke's Drift Art Centre in the Natal, which he returned to as 'Artist in Residence' in 1974. Until 1975 his tapestries, in Karakul wool in the Gobelin technique, echoed his graphics, and this tapestry of a rampant lion certainly appears to fall into this category as the lion resembles closely the lion depicted in the linocut 'A Shepard' made in 1969 (No. 15, p.36 in I was Lonelyness, the catalogue raisonné compiled by Orde Levinson).

The present lot was purchased by the Rev. John Wheeler on one of his many visits to Namibia when commissary of the Bishop Colin O'Brien Winter and his successor Bishop James Hamupnada Kauluma in the 1970s and 80s. During these visits John Muafangejo became a friend of Father Wheeler and stayed with him and his family when visiting the UK for his solo exhibitions at The London Commonwealth Institute and the Royal Festival Hall in 1983 and 1987.
