Footnotes

  • A SCARCE ALBUM, Uchida's output was limited by his early death in 1875, aged 32, just at the point at which his international reputation was beginning to grow. During his career Japanese and foreign commentators considered him to be Japan's most skilled photographer with a talent to rival that of Felix Beato. His reputation was confirmed when he was asked to photograph the Imperial Family in 1872 (the same year in which he accompanied the Emperor on visits to central Japan and Kyushu as official photographer). Until quite recently, problems over attribution have been a severe obstacle to making an assessment of his work. For further details on Uchida's life and career, see Terry Bennett's Photography in Japan 1853-1912 (p.76-81).

Including: views in Nagasaki, notably riverside scenes in Nakashima; temple views in Osawa; a mine in Takashima; several views of Kumamoto castle; the exterior and garden of the Satsuma Residency; a view of Kobe and the harbour; Tennoji Temple, Osaka, and a castle in Nagoya.
