Footnotes

  • George Medal. London Gazette 9.5.1941.

A high explosive bomb partly demolished a house and several people were trapped. Police Constable Taylor, who was off duty, immediately went to the house and assisted two women to safety. He returned and found several women in another room. These he escorted to other houses and, when informed that a man was buried beneath the debris in the basement, he again returned to the damaged house, obtained the assistance of Air Raid Warden Reiss, and searched for the victim.
Taylor and Reiss made their way to the basement, part of which had collapsed and pulled away pieces of masonry and brickwork in an endeavour to reach the man. In the course of this work the Constable had to support a large piece of masonry on his back whilst the Warden pulled the wreckage aside. As this was being done the ceiling fell on top of the rescuers, partilly burying them. Taylor was knocked insensible but he quickly recovered and found that Reiss was still unconscious. Taylor revived the Warden and carried him to the street. He then returned to continue rescue work but as he was entering the basement he suddenly collapsed and had to be taken to hospital.

The lot comes with an assortment of original paperwork comprising Birth certificate, Death certificate, certificate of service whilst in the Royal Marines which shows entitlement to just the BWM, Discharge Certificate from the Metropolitan Police, Last Will and Testament, various photographs and newspaper cuttings, certificate for the Royal Society of St.George, letters of congratulation from New Scotland Yard and the Home Office, Passport, and a wooden box from his Naval service.

In addition to the George Medal the lot includes a Certificate from the Royal Humane Society dated 14th June 1938 when he dived into the Thames at Grosvenor Embankment to save a boy, Patrick Phillip Whelan. The boy although rescued from the Thames was taken to Westminster Hospital but had died. The lot includes details of this rescue.
