A C.B. pair to Major General R.Farquhar, 1st Belooch Battalion, Indian Army,
The Most Honourable Order of the Bath, C.B., Military Division breast badge, in gold and enamel, with buckle and riband, hallmarked for 1860, by S.G.Garrard; Indian Mutiny 1857-58, one bar, Delhi (Col R.Farquhar, C.B., 1st Belooch Battn), with silver riband buckle for wear. A couple of the letters on the surname slightly double struck, otherwise extremely fine. (2)

    Major General R.Farquhar was born on 11.4.1811, educated at the Grammar School and College of Aberdeen, with an emphasis on Classics and Mathematics. Arrived in India in May 1832. He was reported as qualified as an Interpreter in Hindoostanee. Adjutant 6.5.1831. Member of Committee for the Inspection of Remount Hordes, 3.7.1832. Sailed for England 31.10.1832. Permitted to return to India May 1835. Promoted to Captain 8.10.1839. Served as Adjutant or Interpreter with a variety of units from 1837-1842. Returned to Europe in December 1842. Amerced in damages of £750 for criminal conversation with the wife of Captain Mayor of the 6th N.I., reported in the Times 24th June 1844. Returned to Bombay in December 1845. Appointed Commandant of 1st Belooch May 1853.

    When the Indian Mutiny commenced in 1857, the 1st Belooch Regiment under Lieutenant Colonel Farquhar was dispatched across the Sindh desert to join the Delhi Field Force. The regiment was engaged in several actions during the seige and capture of Delhi. During the next two years, it fought in numerous engagements in Oudh and Rohilkhand, as the British Systematically stamped out all resistance.
