LITERATURE: A. Shirley, Leslie's Memoirs of Constable, p.34.
In 1803, Golding Constable made arrangements for his son John Constable to accompany his friend Robert Torin, captain of the East Indiaman the 'Coutts', on a voyage of the ship around the Medway and the Thames. This took place in April/May of the same year, before the ship left for China on 6th May. According to Leslie, Constable made about 130 sketches during the trip of which 47 are accounted for. Constable wrote to his friend John Dunthorne: 'I was on board nearly a month and was much employed in making drawings of ships in all situations. I saw all sorts of weather. Some the most delightful, and some the most melancholy. But such is the enviable state of a painter that he finds delight in every dress nature can possibly assume.'
