AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE - BATTLE OF THE SAINTS

Sold for £ 20,400 (US$ 24,544) inc. premium
AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE - BATTLE OF THE SAINTS
Naval papers of Henri-Cesar de Castellane-Majestre, Captain of the Flore frigate and subsequently the 74-gun Marseillois under Admiral d'Estaing and Admiral de Grasse during the American War of Independence, comprising letters and orders signed by d'Estaing (2), de Grasse (2), Marechal de Castries, Secretary of the French Navy (11), d'Alby Sartine, and others; plus memoranda concerning his conduct at the Battle of the Saints, lists of his services, etc., in marbled paper folders; housed together in custom red morocco clamshell box, some sunning, folio

Footnotes

  • Castellane-Majestre commanded the Marseillois at both Yorktown and the Battle of the Saints (or Saintes); and the present file of papers appears to have been partly assembled for use at Admiral de Grasse's court martial following his disastrous defeat by Rodney at the Saints, which went some way to counter-balancing the loss by Britain of her American colonies by saving her West Indian possessions.

Included among these papers is Castellane-Majastre's 125-page account, written on the Marseillois entitled "précis de la navigation de la campagne de l'armée navale aux orders du cte de Grasse ", comprising a journal beginning on 4 November 1781 and continuing through to the Battle of the Saints, as well as containing reports of the Yorktown engagement and a satirical dialogue between Prince William and the Commander of the British Forces in America, Henry Clinton. In his letters to Castellane-Majastre, de Grasse announces his intention to clear his name by court martial and thanks him for submitting letters on his behalf to the court. Among the official letters addressed to Castellane-Majastre are those appointing him to both the Flore and Marseillois. The journal apart, autograph material by Castellane-Majastre includes memoranda on the actions that took place during the Battle of the Saints, and a draft of a letter recording his impressions of New England.
