In this work, Tsoclis takes his dialectic to the extreme. He presents next to each other in three similar rafts a hole (that is the void), the sky and rubbish. If the latter two constitute the antithesis which is actually the thesis itself, then should we consider the void as the synthesis?" This is how art critic José Pierre described with a philosophical flair True-Ciel-Ordures in the exhibition catalogue of the artist's 1987 retrospective. 1

Particularly innovative, inquisitive and resourceful, Tsoclis has always been preoccupied with pictorial techniques of optical illusion, commenting, in that way, on the nature of representation and the relationship between the real and the artificial. From 1967 to 1972 he produced his highly acclaimed 'objects-situations' series. Stripped of any literal references, message or decorative pretension, these everyday objects constitute a challenge and pretext for metamorphosis. "With frugal means, such as unexpected points of view, dynamic projections into space, intensely rhythmical combinations and masterful juxtapositions of shapes and colours, he manages to reveal an entirely new image, an unsuspected reality, where the mundane and the commonplace have been transmuted into poetry. From ordinariness comes the transcendence of the ordinary. Readily identifiable, these objects retain their identity intact, while at the same time they signify something else: the unique way the artist saw them." 2
