AMERICA - SIR HENRY SMITH
Warrant, signed ("HGSmith/ Mil.y Sec.y"), in his capacity as Military Secretary to Major General Sir John Lambert "Commanding His Majestys Forces Serving on the Coast of America", to Henry Scovell, Assistant Deputy Paymaster General, ordering £746-8s-11d be paid to officers under his command, one page, light dust-staining, guard, folio, "Dauphin Island", 18 March 1815

Footnotes

  • SIR HARRY SMITH DURING THE NEW ORLEANS CAMPAIGN IN THE WAR OF 1812. This document was issued when Smith – the future 'Hero of Aliwal' – was serving as Sir John Lambert's Military Secretary, having witnessed the burning of Washington and in January 1815 negotiated the truce after Pakenham's failed attack on New Orleans. News had arrived on 14 February that the treaty ending the war had been signed and was awaiting ratification. Meanwhile, 'it was resolved to disembark the whole army on a large island at the entrance of Mobile Bay, called Isle Dauphine', where, thanks to his ingenuity, the army was kept well-fed and entertained (Autobiography). The ratification arrived on 5 March and soon afterwards Smith embarked for Havana. Notwithstanding the extraordinary fame which Smith, and his wife, attained – exemplified in the naming of many towns, such as Ladysmith, after them – letters and documents by him very rarely occur for sale. None is recorded in ABPC as having appeared at auction since 1975.
