Footnotes

  • The procession of boats was unofficially inaugurated at Eton College in 1793 to commemorate the birthday of King George lll. By 1840 it had become officially recognised and had assumed the format seen today; a procession of 10 boats, led by the unique 10-oar Monarch, passes along the Thames waterfront and under Windsor Bridge, the crews standing up in their boats, shaking flowers from their boaters into the water. The uniforms of the crews and the names of the boats all reflect the traditions of Nelson's Navy. Victory, no.2 in the procession, is crewed by the 2nd College eight. Thetis at no.7, is manned by Colts C crew.
