Toti Scialoja is considered one of the most important figures of the Italian abstract art. The present lot is dated from the artists first Expressionist period. Executed in Paris in 1948 during his second trip to the French capital this painting is a very fine example of Parisian views and a similar view Café le Royal Saint Germain, 1948 now hangs in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.
His stay in Paris gave him the opportunity to see the works of artists such as Van Gogh and Kokoschka. He was especially influenced by Soutines brushstrokes, which we can see in evidence in this lot.
Scialoja's works of 1948 in Paris are corners, large and empty streets with large buildings in the foreground.
In December 1948 to January 1949 an exhibition of Scialoja's Parisian views was mounted at the Gallery La Finestra in Rome, with Scialoja writing the catalogue entry. The present lot may have been exhibited there
