London, Knightsbridge

A South German 19th century oak and marquetry wall cabinet
in late Gothic style, the interior with three shelves, the exterior with a tiled roof above crocket-carved colonnettes and pinnacles, above a pair of tabernacles supporting carved sculptures of Albrecht Dürer and Hans Sachs, flanking a cusped arched panel inlaid with a micro-mosaic marquetry view of the historic centre of Nuremberg, the panel signed to the bottom with illegible monogram (possibly "A I"), the German coats of arms below flanking a banner inscribed "Wenn einer Deutschland kennen und Deutschland lieben soll, Wird man ihm Nürnberg nennen der edlen Künste voll. Die nimmer mehr veraltet die treue fleißige Stadt, wo Dürers Kunst gewaltet, Hans Sachs gesungen hat", 50cm wide x 21cm deep x 88cm high, (20in wide x 8.5in deep x 35in high)

Footnotes

  • The inscription translates roughly as: "If someone is meant to know and love Germany, he will be told about Nürnberg which holds many arts. The never aging, truly industrious town in which Dürer has painted and Hans Sachs has sung."
