MAGRUDER, ALLAN BOWIE. 1775-1822.
Political, Commercial and Moral Reflections, on the late Cession of Louisiana, to the United States. Lexington, KY: D. Bradford, 1803.
ix, [10]-150 pp. 12mo (175 x 106 mm). Old marbled sheep, rebacked. Marginal tear from M1, few instances of shaved pagination, prelims a little short, title rehinged and with pale dampstain.

FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE RAREST ITEMS RELATING TO THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE. The work is "one of the earliest and most extensive accounts of the newly acquired Louisiana Territory. Magruder's analysis ... is the most comprehensive published treatment of the acquisition" though a document too neglected by historians (Rodriguez). The author, Allan Bowie Magruder, was a Kentucky-born lawyer and land agent, evidently knowledgeable and persuasive, though his career was sometimes hampered by alcohol. More than half of Magruder's essay treats of the political advantages of the Purchase, namely all the benefits of the avoidance of war. The commercial benefits of the now uncontested right to the Mississippi are obvious, but Magruder displays his expert knowledge in a thorough treatment of Louisiana's natural resources, potential for agricultural development and coastal trade. He went on to serve on the committee to draft the Louisiana constitution and to serve one term as Senator. Very rare. We locate only 2 copies at auction in the last century, at Anderson Galleries in 1922 and in the Streeter sale.
Howes M215 ("d"); Shaw & Shoemaker 4578; Streeter sale 1575. See Rodriguez Louisiana Purchase: A Historical and Geographical Encyclopedia, pp 210-211.
Acquisition: purchased from William Reese Company, 2000, $14,000.

"The late cession of Louisiana to the United States whilst it seems to mark the finger of a benevolent Providence, who guards the happiness of the state, for some important end, presents to the mind a series of good fortune, that has never yet been clearly developed."
